Client/Project Overview

Skunk Magazine, an 18-year-old global cannabis publication, wanted to launch an online store featuring a core line of branded merchandise and apparel. The goal was to appeal to both longtime Skunk supporters and a new wave of cannabis connoisseurs. At the same time, the magazine was undergoing a rebrand—from its iconic black and white, masculine feel to a green renaissance-inspired, more feminine identity. I worked closely with owner and editor-in-chief Julie Chiariello to develop a versatile, foundational collection.

My Role

  • Design line of branded merchandise using existing brand assets within a very limited budget.

  • Set-up, edited photos, categorized assets, and wrote product descriptions for online store on the WooCommerce platform.

  • Supported the store launch with social media content.

  • Illustrated additional products to position the brand’s line for future collaborations with other artists.

Creative Process/Finals

I researched the cannabis apparel market, analyzing what competitors and iconic brands like Playboy were doing.

Challenges/Solutions

The challenge was to balance Skunk’s edgy, rebellious tone with a more refined, feminine feel that aligned with their new branding direction. By combining the original bold assets with new illustrative elements, I created a line that honored the magazine’s history while opening the door to a new era in the cannabis movement.

“Janelle’s talent is absolutely incredible—not just as a fine artist, but as a multifaceted designer who can grasp exactly what her clients’ needs are and deliver them… She’s professional, very quick, attentive, and organized.”
